Planning a bathroom renovation in Durham: A homeowners guide

Understanding your space

When planning a bathroom layout, we always start by assessing the existing space and how it’s currently being used, then work closely with the homeowner to identify opportunities to improve flow, usable floor space and day-to-day practicality.

The proposed layout may vary depending on the customer, family size, how often the room is used or other factors.

In many cases, this involves rethinking traditional layouts, such as combining separate rooms or replacing features that take up unnecessary space. For example, by knocking through a compact bathroom and a narrow WC to create one larger room, we were able to remove a bulky bath in favour of a walk-in shower, eliminate inefficient storage, and introduce a vanity unit that provides far more usable storage without cluttering the space.

Finishing choices, such as gloss wall panels, are also carefully considered to help reflect light and create the illusion of a larger room, allowing modern features like towel radiators and Bluetooth LED mirrors to be added without the bathroom feeling overcrowded.

Choosing the right bathroom layout

Do you go with a bath or a shower, or both? This all comes down to factors like customer mobility, space availability and available plumbing.  Some additional features such as combi boilers may be needed or recommended if you opt to install a shower.

Some customers who have mobility issues may prefer a walk in shower to a traditional bath due to its ease of access. If you are the type that sometimes prefers to have a bath, a shower bath may be preferred giving you the flexibility to have both, this then opens the question of bath shapes and sizes, L Shaped and P Shaped baths can be useful for those who need or prefer extra space during their shower.

Space Saving

If space is an issue we have various options to make the most of your space, ideas such as our cistern sink, a super space saving idea when you are really short on space.

Alternatively if floor space is a concern we offer a range of wall mounted furniture which gives the feel of a bigger room due to being wall mounted.

Bespoke Storage

This space was too small to fit any sort of storage unit so our team made 2 small shelves using the rigid acoustic panel to match the feature wall.

Space Saving Solutions

This ultra space saving solution uses the cistern as a mount for a space saving sink, ideal for when you simply don’t have the space.

Future Proofing

At Hobsons we specialise in Waterproof Wall panel installations, there are many reasons for this, but one is that they are future proof, they are long lasting, waterproof and durable so they will last a long time, but they have the added benefit of being so much easier to replace than tiles.  With tiles often you cause significant damage removing tiles which are costly to replace and may mean needing to replace or repair the existing wall, with our waterproof panels they are installed in a manner which means if you want to refresh the design of your room, you can simply remove and replace the panels for a new design without causing significant damage to your wall which gives you a cost effective method in future to update the design of your room.

Selecting Materials that Suit Your Home

Every customer is different, and so are their bathrooms, that’s why we cater each bathroom to our customers needs and style preferences, matching colours, styles and practical options to suit their needs.

At Hobsons Bathrooms we specialise in waterproof wall panel installations, primarily for reasons covered above, but also for additional reasons;

We have a range of over well over 20 unique styles of waterproof PVC wall panels, available in various widths including 250mm, 600mm and 1m wide.

Choosing a feature wall panel style for a main area like a shower enclosure of vanity unit wall can highlight a particular area of your room making it a focal point.

Flooring Options

Choosing your flooring may seem straight forward but the style and colour can make a huge difference to the look of your bathroom.

Simple choices like the direction of your flooring can give the illusion of a bigger room, also using a light coloured floor can also make the room feel lighter and more spacious.

We always try to help our customer choose a style that works for their bathroom and complements the colour choices of the walls and furniture.

Lighting and practical touches

Lighting is key to any room, especially your bathroom, we generally opt for led downlights in most of our installations due to their flexible positioning options and exceptional brightness.

Its not just the ceiling that plays a part in lighting your room, we also install LED backlit mirrors which can add additional lighting and dazzle to your room, used on a feature wall they can really stand out and reflect additional light around your bathroom and the different lighting tone options lets you adjust the ambience to suit your mood creating a soft/warmer feel or cooler/brighter feel.
